Enrique Riquelme promises his first mega signing if he becomes president – ‘He will play for Real Madrid’

Enrique Riquelme appears to be the only party campaigning ahead of Real Madrid’s presidential elections with purpose, for Florentino Perez has barely made any open commitment to win.

The current president is the massive favourite to win regardless, and that is likely the reason for his confidence.

Riquelme, however, is going all out with mega announcements, repeated endorsements of his project, and even promises of big-name signings should he be brought to power.

Riquelme’s mega announcement

Riquelme spoke to the media via Diario AS earlier this week where he continued to tease the announcements of his signings and seemingly postponed the announcement once again.

“Tonight we start with news in the sports part. The rest of the days we will be giving data on who will accompany us as sports director, in the quarry, coaches. And then what everyone is waiting for, who will be the big signings?”

“We are going to give during the week at least two names, two stars, who are fundamental and will change the dynamic, they will make the team more competitive,” he added.

He then continued to speak about the schedule according to which he will gradually announce details of his plans as Real Madrid president.

“These days we will continue to give names. Next Wednesday we will name one of the great stars within our candidacy.”

Going forward in the interview, however, he did name one of his big-name player signings to be Manchester City’s Rodri.

“Rodri is a great player, I have said it many times, these days, when they have asked me and I don’t have to hide it. If I am president of Real Madrid, a player like Rodri will play in Real Madrid.”

“So, the Spanish national team will have a player, and we will not go through the painful shame of not having any Real Madrid players in the Spanish National Team. I would like Rodri to play for Real Madrid,” he added, speaking on the Spanish NT not having Real Madrid players.

On Florentino Perez

The presidential candidate then spoke out on Florentino Perez openly refusing to have a debate with him ahead of the elections.

“I’m surprised [that Florentino doesn’t want to debate]. In that first press conference, it seemed to me that he invited us to introduce ourselves, put the candidacy and the endorsement, and then start debating.”

“We are going with a proposal for a healthy and professional candidacy, we respect his legacy, it is the basis of the future and we simply want to propose our ideas, debate them – how he sees privatisation of the club and how we see it,” he added.

Stressing how a debate would only be healthy for the growth and direction of the club, Riquelme said,

“It’s healthy to debate ideas after 20 years. I respect that he doesn’t want to debate, but if someone doesn’t want to debate, is he prepared to lead the club?”

“I wish there were more candidates and several proposals could be discussed. We have to propose a club for the next few years, what Madrid we want for 2040,” he added.

He was then asked about Florentino Perez’s presence at Real Madrid Castilla’s game on Friday and why he did not attend.

“I went to work at my electoral headquarters. Some people went to Di Stéfano with polo shirts from my candidacy and they were not allowed in,” he said.

He then commented on the buses he arranged in Budapest at the venue of the UCL final, saying,

“The buses in Budapest seem to me a healthy wink with a sense of humor. The Champions League is our home.”

On the Casa del Socios

Finally, the presidential candidate was asked about his plan to open a special Casa del Socios for the club members, saying,

“It’s been 20 years since certain rights have been taken away from the members. The Casa del Socios will be paid with the club’s savings, between 120 and 140 million euros that we have in general expenses, not sporting.”

He then asked for the trust of club members and their votes for the project he had in mind.

“I am not asking for the vote for myself,” he said.

“I am asking the partner to vote on proposals, the problem is that only proposals come from one side. The candidacy of candidate Pérez only speaks of me. His agenda is me and in a way that is not the right one,” he concluded.

Manchester City host Crystal Palace on Wednesday after last week’s 3-0 win over Brentford as Blues chase Arsenal for the Premier League title.

Another Jeremy Doku pearler alongside goals from Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush saw City take all three points against European qualification chasing Brentford on Saturday.

The two sides went into half-time goalless, despite City having 15 shots and four on target to Brentford’s solo attempt at goal.

It was a cagey affair with tension being felt all around the Etihad Stadium, but Doku relieved the City fans on the hour mark with yet another stunning curled effort into the top right corner.

Predicted Starting XI: Manchester City vs Crystal Palace (Premier League)

A quarter of an hour later, Haaland got in on the act after some brilliant work down the right-wing by Antoine Semenyo, who pulled the ball back inside the penalty area and after a scramble for Haaland to poke the ball into the back of the net to double City’s lead.

In stoppage time, City added what could turn out to be a vital third goal in the title race as Marmoush instinctively drilling a low shot past Caoimhin Kelleher after being played in behind by Haaland, who bagged his eight Premier League assist of the season.

The win moved Pep Guardiola’s side back to within two points of league leaders Arsenal before the Gunners restored their five-point lead at the summit, having played an extra game – after a tense 1-0 win over relegation threatened West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday.

City’s match against Crystal Palace is their game in hand on Arsenal, with the Blues relying on the league leaders dropping points in one of their last two matches against Burnley and Crystal Palace, to stand a chance of winning the Premier League title.

Here’s everything you need to know about City’s clash with UEFA Conference League finalists Crystal Palace on Wednesday night!

Team News

Guardiola’s side received a boost prior to the Brentford win as Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias returned to first-team training; the former has been out of action for just over four months after a leg break against Chelsea in January.

Gvardiol was unavailable for the Brentford match and is facing a late fitness test ahead of Wednesday. However, Dias returned to the bench against the Bees after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained before the Carabao Cup final in March.

Rodri is doubtful to be fit for the match versus the Eagles with a groin injury he picked up in the 2-1 win over Arsenal in April, while Abdukodir Khusanov is also a doubt after sustaining a knock ‘in a painful area’ in City’s 3-3 draw with Everton last week – though his injury is not thought to be serious.

For Oliver Glasner, Borna Sosa (muscle), Evann Guessand (knee), Cheick Doucoure (knee) and Eddie Nketiah (hamstring) are all ruled out of action for Wednesday’s match.

The south London outfit have been frequently rotating their squad for Premier League games of late, prioritising their opportunity to win a first-ever European trophy.

Press Conference Notes

Guardiola will preview Wednesday’s fixture in a press conference at the City Football Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

Pep Guardiola: We have done it before, we can win the domestic treble again

Head to Head

The last meeting between the two sides was a 3-0 win for City at Selhurt Park in December 2025, with Phil Foden getting on the scoresheet and Haaland scoring a brace.

At the Etihad Stadium, their previous encounter was a comeback 5-2 win for City in April 2025 as Guardiola and co came from behind after going two goals down in the opening 21 minutes.

Palace haven’t won this fixture in the Premier League for just over four years, having secured a shock 2-0 win at the Etihad Stadium in October 2021.

Both sides have scored at least twice in four of their last five league meetings: two 2-2 draws plus 4-2 and 5-2 wins for City.

Crystal Palace have opened the scoring within 10 minutes in four of their last seven league meetings with City but have failed to win on each of those four occasions.

Statistics

Manchester City are unbeaten in their last eight matches across all competitions, drawing just once.

The Blues are also unbeaten in their last 19 matches in domestic competitions.

In the Premier League table, City sit on 74 points after 35 games, with Arsenal leading the way with 79 points after 36 games. Guardiola’s side need to win their three remaining matches and hope for Arsenal to draw at least one of their last two matches in hope of winning the Premier League title for a ninth time.

City have scored the most goals in the Premier League this season – 72.

Jeremy Doku can compete with Lamine Yamal and Vinicius Jr, says Pep Guardiola

Ismaila Sarr netted his 20th goal of the season in Palace’s 2-2 draw with Everton on Sunday, becoming just the second Crystal Palace player to reach that milestone in a single campaign as a top-flight club – after Andy Johnson (20) in the 2004-05 campaign.

How to watch

The match will be shown live in the UK on Sky Sports Premier League, Sky Sports Main Event, NOW TV, Sky Go UK, SKY GO Extra and Sky Ultra HD.

For viewers in the United States, the match will be shown via USA Network.
